Mental Training in Handball: Juri Knorr on Pressure, Mistakes and Mental Strength

Juri Knorr and Learn Handball

“When everything is on the line and the pressure rises, I try to be ready.” – Juri Knorr

What actually goes on in the mind of a professional handball player when the pressure rises? When an important shot misses the target? When confidence starts to fade? Or when suddenly everything is at stake?

In handball, we spend an incredible amount of time working on technique, tactics and physical fitness. But how often do we think about what is going on in our players' minds?

The mental side of handball is just as important as physical training. Many experts even say that the game is decided in the mind.

That is why we are really excited to present a new series about mental training and mental strength in handball, together with Juri Knorr and DVAG.

A Different Side of the Game

Juri Knorr is one of Germany's best-known handball players. We know him for his spectacular goals, creativity and special moments on the court.

But what happens behind the scenes?

How does Juri deal with mistakes? What does he do when he feels nervous? How does he find his way back into a game after difficult moments? And how does he manage to keep following his dreams, even when things do not go according to plan?

That is exactly what Juri talks about in our new series.

And what we particularly appreciate is how openly and honestly he shares his experiences. Not only the positive sides of professional sport, but also self-doubt, stress, disappointment and challenges that every handball player can relate to – regardless of their level.

Mental Strength Can Be Trained

One of the most important messages of this series is that mental challenges are completely normal.

Nervousness before an important match. Frustration after making a mistake. Doubts about your own performance. Or the feeling that you are not living up to expectations.

All of these things are part of sport.

What matters is how we learn to deal with them.

Juri shares personal insights into his experiences with mental training and shows which methods help him stay focused and be ready when it matters most.

These include simple breathing techniques, consciously becoming aware of your senses, and exercises that help you return to the present moment after making a mistake.

Because sometimes the biggest problem is not the mistake itself, but what happens in our minds afterwards.

Real Game Situations. Real Thoughts. Real Experiences.

One special element of the series is that Juri watches and reflects on his own game footage.

Not only spectacular goals and successful actions, but also moments when things did not go as planned.

What was going through his mind at that moment? How did he react to a mistake? What might he do differently today?

These insights make the series particularly interesting.

We do not just see what a world-class player does on the court. We also learn how he thinks, how he deals with difficult situations and what we can take away from his experiences.

Mental Training Must Be a Topic for Coaches

The series is not only for players.

For coaches in particular, it can be incredibly valuable to better understand what young players experience in difficult situations.

What does a player need after making several mistakes? How can we help players deal with nervousness? How can we support young talents in building confidence and moving forward after disappointment?

As coaches, we do not need to have the perfect answer to every mental challenge.

But we can learn to pay closer attention, listen and give our players the support they need.

And perhaps that is one of the most important steps in helping young people develop over the long term.

Together with DVAG for the Next Generation

We are very grateful that DVAG has made this project possible together with Juri Knorr and Learn Handball.

Deutsche Vermögensberatung has been committed to sport and talent development for many years. With Juri Knorr as a brand ambassador, its partnership with Deutsche Sporthilfe, and the commitment of around 18,500 financial coaches to regional grassroots sport, DVAG supports athletes along the way.

Through this series, we want to work together to make mental strength and mental training easier to understand and more accessible for young handball talents.

Mental Strength Is Part of Handball

For us at Learn Handball, this is a particularly exciting project.

We do not just want to show how the best handball players in the world train. We also want to understand how they think, how they deal with challenges and how they continue to develop over many years.

And most importantly, we want to make this knowledge useful in everyday training.

A huge thank you to Juri Knorr, DVAG and everyone who contributed to this project.

We hope this series encourages players to explore and develop their mental strength, while giving coaches new perspectives for their daily work.

The complete mental training series with Juri Knorr is now available on YouTube and in the Learn Handball App.

Because mental strength does not mean never making mistakes or never feeling nervous. It means learning how to deal with those moments.

Handball greetings from Learn Handball
