The save starts long before the shot

The save starts long before the shot

David Späth and Learn Handball

The goalkeeper is one of the most fascinating positions in handball.

A save can look spectacular, explosive and almost instinctive. But very often, the save does not start when the ball leaves the shooter's hand. It starts much earlier.

It starts with preparation.

With mobility. With balance. With positioning. With good habits. And with small details goalkeepers work on again and again in training.

That is why we are incredibly happy to launch a brand-new goalkeeper series with David Späth, German national goalkeeper, powered by DVAG.

Over the years, goalkeeper training has been one of the topics we have received the most questions about at Learn Handball. Many coaches want to help their goalkeepers, but do not have a dedicated goalkeeper coach in the club. The question is often the same: What can we actually do in normal team training to help our goalkeepers develop?

This project with David is our answer to exactly that question.

Together with David Späth and DVAG, we spent time in the hall creating practical goalkeeper exercises that coaches and players can use straight away. The focus is not on complicated setups or perfect conditions. The focus is on useful, realistic and inspiring training ideas.

In the new series, David shares exercises and ideas in several key areas:

  • Mobility and activation
  • Training alone
  • Training with a partner or coach
  • Training with the team

It was especially great to see how simple some of the exercises can be. A goalkeeper does not always need a full team, a dedicated goalkeeper coach or advanced equipment to work on important details. Sometimes a wall, a ball, a little space and a clear focus are enough to take the next step.

That is an important message for many young goalkeepers.

If you are not standing in goal during team training right now, you can still train. If your club does not have a goalkeeper coach, you can still improve. If you want to get better, there are always small things you can work on.

And those small things can make a big difference.

David brings a modern and very inspiring perspective to the goalkeeper position. He shows exercises that are easy to understand, but at the same time closely connected to what goalkeepers actually need in everyday training. It is not just about the save itself. It is about preparing the body, building good habits and being ready when the moment comes.

The save starts long before the shot.

We are also very grateful to have DVAG as a partner in this project. Deutsche Vermögensberatung has been committed to sport and talent development for many years. With German national goalkeeper David Späth as brand ambassador, the partnership with Deutsche Sporthilfe and the commitment of around 18,500 financial coaches to regional grassroots sport, DVAG supports athletes along the way. With the training series together with David Späth and Learn Handball, DVAG wants to inspire young handball talents and support them in their development.

For us at Learn Handball, this is exactly the kind of project we love. Taking knowledge from top players and making it available for everyday handball. Making it practical. Making it understandable. And making it usable for coaches, players and clubs everywhere.

A big thank you to David Späth, DVAG and everyone who has been involved in the project.

We hope these videos inspire coaches to give their goalkeepers even more attention, and that young goalkeepers feel that their position truly matters.

The new exercises with David are now available on YouTube and, of course, in Learn Handball.
